The morning after Christmas I was awake early and sitting in my living room by the tree. I decided not to turn on any lights and read my Bible, but instead to wait patiently upon the Lord knowing He wanted to speak to me. After a few moments, I heard a tapping sound. It wasn’t a rattle or dripping noise, but a distinct pattern of taps. I quieted my heart in between the sound as my spirit began to take notice. I had never before heard this sound in my home or anywhere else and as I sat trying to interpret what it was or where it was coming from, the Holy Spirit interrupted my thoughts and said, “I’m sending you a message in morse code.”
Perhaps I should have known from history class, but I have no recollection of ever having learning about morse code. I grabbed my phone and began to read all about the innovative communication invention of the 1800’s. Several minutes passed as I was diligently digging to uncover this hidden message by way of discovering a soul who followed God passionately in a world where his pursuit was not easily understood. I soon landed exactly where God was waiting for me… the first message successfully sent and received through morse code. “What hath God wrought.” Numbers 23:23. I opened my Bible and started at Numbers 23:1 and realized this scripture was the answer to the prayer I had prayed a few hours ago. It’s an account of a wicked king wanting a curse to be spoken over God’s chosen people, but instead they were being blessed. Numbers 23:23 is a declaration that we must never forget what great things God has done! But it gets better. The very next verse proclaims these words about God’s sons and daughters, “Behold, the people rise up like a lioness; like a majestic lion rousing itself.” I was breathless while being reminded of who He says we are, even in the midst of threatening curses – His arising lioness.
As I sat there smiling and recounting every lioness word over my life and the lives of my loved ones, I marveled at the brilliant way Jesus captured my attention. He could have just told me Numbers 23:23 or had me open my Bible and lead me straight there, but He sent me an encrypted message that only the Holy Spirit could decipher for me. He used what we might consider an outdated form of communication to send me the warmth of His heart one tap at a time. And because He remains outside of time, He has not forgotten how to use all of His spirited ideas that have revolutionized the world many times over.
In the few days that have passed since this message was revealed, I’ve sensed the Holy Spirit is searching near and far for those who are prepared to be the carriers of more of His progressive ideas. I’ve been untucking the accounts of glory sealed upon my heart of some of my favorite faith pioneers to unlock the present-day application and how God’s will can be moved forward by our remembrance and obedience. And I have had my heart blown open wide by the Spirit of Jesus Christ who invents, unveils, and creates tangible vessels that will contain holy and sacred pieces of Heaven here below …ones that He will never let us forget.
I believe God is calling by name those of us who are readied by reverence and soaked in the splendor of His prayers that we’ve heard and held onto. This will be a new year of sons and daughters forsaking worldly thinking in order to grasp God’s higher ways that can only be accessed by falling facedown. May we be expanded beyond our capacity to encounter greater glory and be trusted to steward the dreams of God that await those who are filled with His Holy Spirit. More than anything, I pray that His lioness will rise up!
“It was the Lord who put into my mind that fact that it would be possible to sail from here to the Indies. All who heard of my project rejected it with laughter, ridiculing me. There is no question that the inspiration was from the Holy Spirit, because He comforted me with rays of marvelous inspiration from the Holy Scriptures.” Christopher Columbus
“God is going to reveal to us things He never revealed before if we put our hands in His. No books ever go into my laboratory. The thing I am to do and the way of doing it are revealed to me. I never have to grope for methods. The method is revealed to me the moment I am inspired to create something new. Without God to draw aside the curtain I would be helpless.” George Washington Carver
“There was such a glory over everything; the sun came like gold through the trees, and over the fields, and I felt like I was in Heaven.” Harriet Tubman
